Feb. 22, 2012, Professor Mohamed Zain Al Abdeen, the Dean of the College of Higher Education at the Zaem Al Azhari University was arrested yesterday at approximately 3 p.m. after leaving his office at the university.
His family confirmed to Girifna that the arrest was carried out by the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS)
After finding out his whereabouts, his brother took some medications and a change of clothes to the NISS premises a few hours ago, he was not allowed to see him personally, but an officer there told the brother that Professor Al Abdeen requested more medications and we take this as a proof that the medications have reached him.
Professor Al Abdeen was arrested after publishing an article on the recent televised interview with President Al Bashir. In his article, he discussed corruption in Sudan and directly asked how the president acquired a number of expensive property.
” We all know the situation of an army official and his family, army officials don’t even have a house in Om-bada,” he wrote in the article published in a privately-owned newspaper, Al Tayar where he stated that the president’s assets were acquired after the 1989 coup since the declaration of assets only came now.
It should also be noted that the Monday issue of Al Tayar newspaper was confiscated after publication as a punishment for publishing this daring article on corruption in Sudan.
Professor Al Abdeen has returned to Sudan after living in the United Kingdom for a long period of time. He is a dual Sudanese and British citizen.

تم اعتقال البروفيسور محمد زين العابدين ، عميد كلية الدراسات العليا بجامعة الزعيم الازهري امس يوم الثلاثاء الموافق 21 فبراير 2012 فور خروجه من مكتبه في الجامعة.
أسرته أكدت لحركة قرفنا أن الاعتقال كان بواسطة جهاز الامن .
بعد التأكد من مكان وجوده ، قام شقيقه بأخذ أدوية و ملابس لمكتب جهاز الامن في صباح اليوم ، وللأسف لم يتمكن من رؤيته ولكن تأكد له أن الدواء وصل البروفيسور .
بروفيسور زين العابدين تم اعتقاله بعد كتابته مقالة عن الفساد في السودان على جميع مستويات الدولة و تعليقه على مقابلة الرئيس البشير الاخيرة.
في نص المقالة ، قام بالتسأول عن ممتلكات الرئيس باهظة الثمن.
“ والرئيس قال أنه شخصياً قد أودع أبراء ذمة عند النائب العام وفيه أقر أنه يملك منزلاً فى كافورى وآخر بالمنشيئة وشقة بمجمع نصر ومزرعة كبيرة بالسليت ويبقى السؤال هل أودع هذا الأقرار بابراء الذمة يوم أن أستولى على السلطة فى 30 يونيو 1989م أم بعد أنتخابه أخيراً رئيساً للجمهورية ” .
اذا كان اقراره هذا منذ عام 1989م فالكل يعرف حاله وحال اسرته وأنه لا أكثر من ضابط بالجيش والذين فى رتبته لا يملكون منزلاً حتى فى أمبدة. وأذا كان أودع أبراء الذمة من قبل سنتين من حقنا أن نتساءل من اين للرئيس كل هذا؟”
بعد نشر المقالة ، تمت مصادرة جميع نسخ يوم الاثنين من صحيفة التيار.
البروفسور زين العابدين رجع الى السودان بعد غربة طويلة في المملكة المتحدة وهو يحمل الجنسية الانجليزية.
