Last Tuesday and for the period of two days, the Sudanese army clashed with forces from the South Sudan army in Higleig, a key oil-producing town. We firmly believe that this confrontation and the escalating situation in Blue Nile and South Kordofan could lead to a conflict between the two Sudans.

The truth is, Sudan is already at war, in fact, the country has four ongoing conflicts. The conflict in Abyei has yet to be resolved while some armed movements in Darfur have yet to sign a peace agreement with the government, civilian deaths continue across Darfur and peace-keepers in some areas struggle to do their work as they have no peace to keep.In two states, South Kordofan and Blue Nile, a bloody conflict rages between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and Sudan People’s Liberation Movement- North (SPLM-N), a party currently banned by the Sudanese government and considered a rebel movement. 

In all these conflicts, civilians have been caught in the crossfire. Thousands of innocent civilians from Blue Nile state have sought refuge in Ethiopia since last September while thousands have walked for 2 to 3 months from South Kordofan to Kakuma, a refugee camp in Kenya.

Since its founding in 2009, Girifna has helped spread awareness of the different conflicts in Sudan through its magazine, website, public speaking and events. It will continue working towards peace and change in Sudan. As a group aiming at regime-change in Sudan through non-violent means, we believe that the ruling party is not serious in promoting peace. Not only is the government failing to protect civilians caught between the national army and the armed movements, it is directly implicated in bombing, starving and displacing civilians.

Just yesterday, Frontier Economics Limited, an independent research group, estimated the cost of conflict between Sudan and South Sudan in a published report at over $100 billion. Girifna believes that the human cost will be even more pressing as the government will sacrifice its entire civilian population to stay in power.

Girifna condemns violence in all its forms and will work tirelessly to stop war between Sudan and South Sudan through mobilizing the Sudanese public and appealing to the international community who are powerful stakeholders in Sudan’s peace process.

‎‫في يوم الثلاثاء الماضي و لمدة يومين، اشتبك الجيش السوداني مع قوات من جيش جنوب السودان في هجليج، مدينة سراتيجية تنتج النفط. نحن نعتقد اعتقادا راسخا بأن هذه المواجهة والاشتباكات المتصاعدة في النيل الأزرق وجنوب كردفان يمكن أن تؤدي إلى صراع  بين البلدين.

‬‫الحقيقة هي: السودان بالفعل في حالة حرب، فإن السودان لديه أربعة صراعات مستمرة.‬

‎‫قضية النزاع في منطقة أبيي لم يتفق عليها في حين أن بعض الحركات المسلحة في دارفور لم توقع اتفاق سلام مع الحكومة، وقتل المدنيين في دارفور لم يتوقف وتواجه قوات حفظ السلام في بعض المناطق صعوبة في القيام بعملها في حين عدم وجود سلام ليتم المحافظة عليه  . في ولايتا، جنوب كردفان والنيل الأزرق، يحتدم الصراع الدموي بين القوات المسلحة السودانية و الحركة الشعبية لتحرير السودان- قطاع الشمال، وهو حزب محظور في السودان وتعتبره الحكومة السودانية حركة تمرد‬

‎‫في كل هذه الصراعات، تم حصارالمدنيين في مرمى النيران. وقد هرب الآلاف من الأبرياء من ولاية النيل الأزرق الى أثيوبيا حيث اصبحوا لاجؤن. في حين مشى الكثير من ضحايا الحرب في ولاية جنوب كردفان الى كاكوما ، وهو مخيم للاجئين في كينيا.‬

‎‫منذ تأسيسها في عام 2009، ساعدت حركة قرفنا على نشر الوعي في مجال الصراعات المختلفة في السودان من خلال مجلتها، الموقع الإلكتروني ،المخاطبات العامة و الملتقيات. وسوف نواصل العمل من أجل السلام والتغيير في السودان. كمجموعة تهدف الى تغيير النظام في السودان بطرق سلمية، نحن نعتقد أن الحزب الحاكم ليس جاد في تعزيز السلام في السودان. الحكومة فشلت في حماية المدنيين المحاصرين بين الجيش الوطني والحركات المسلحة و في نفس الوقت النظام متورط بشكل مباشر في قصف القرى والمدن وتجويع وتشريد المدنيين.‬

‎‫بالأمس فقط قدرت مجموعة بحثية مستقلة في تقريرعن تكلفة الحرب في السودان ان اي نزاع بين  السودان وجنوب السودان سوف يكلف أكثر من 100 مليار دولار. قرفنا تعتقد أن الكلفة البشرية ستكون أكثر إلحاحا حيث ان الحكومة على استعداد للتضحية بسكانها للبقاء في السلطة.‬
