On Saturday, April 14, 2012 the Initiative for Advocating the Case of Awadiya Ajabna, who was shot dead by the Public Order Police, planned and organized an open day commemorating 40 days since Awadiya’s death. The organizers were a group of civil society actors that included:

No to the Oppression of Women,
Forces of National Consensus,
the Women’s Union,
the Youth Union,
Haq,
Al-Khatim Adlan Center,
GIRIFNA,
the Communist Party,
Coalition of the Nuba Mountains Sons,
the Coalition of the Sons of Amma,
and residents of al Daim.

The memorial was held at the house of the martyr’s family in al-Daim and sparked an impressive turnout. Dozens of flyers, banners and posters in solidarity with Awadiya were distributed all around the neighborhood and throughout the event premises. Additionally, ribbons and stickers featuring statements of solidarity were handed out to attendees.Despite suffering several glitches as a result of the National Intelligence Security Service’s interference and constant attempts to sabotage the event in order to prevent the spread of awareness on violence against Sudanese women, the organizing committee overcame all obstacles and launched the memorial as scheduled.Hundreds attended the service, comprising of Awadiya’s family members, neighbors and friends in addition to a considerable number of political party members and leaders, activists, journalists and regular citizens who came to show their support for the case and stand in solidarity with the Ajabna family.The program opened with verses from the Holy Quran, followed by poem recitals and speeches in honor of the martyr Awadiya, performed by family members, neighborhood spokespersons, representatives from the Nuba Mountains Students Union and others.

The speakers demanded justice for Awadiya; and called for accountability and a transparent investigation into her case. They also called on the removal of the notorious and brutal Public Order Police which victimized countless Sudanese citizens.

The mood was incredibly uplifting and the atmosphere was filled with spirits of solidarity and unison. Awadiya’s unfortunate death brought Sudanese people from various backgrounds, tribes, ethnicities and social statuses together. They all joined forces towards one unified public, national issue: the case of Awadiya Ajabna – the case of the Sudanese woman – the case of an entire nation.

في يوم السبت الموافق 14 أبريل 2012 قامت مبادرة مناصرة قضية الشهيدة عوضية عجبنا، التي استشهدت برصاصة شرطة النظام العام، بتنظيم يوم مفتوح بمناسبة الذكرى الأربعينية لتأبين الشهيدة. المنظمين مجموعة من المجتمع المدني ضمت المجموعات التالية: 

-لا لقهر النساء
-قوى الإجماع الوطني
-الاتحاد النسائي
-اتحاد الشباب
-الحزب الشيوعي
-حق
-مركز الخاتم عدلان
-قرفنا
-رابطة أبناء جبال النوبة
-رابطة أبناء أما
-اتحاد روابط جبال النوبة
-أهالي الديم

أقيم التأبين بمنزل عائلة الشهيدة في حي الديم وتلقى إقبالاً كبيراً. تم توزيع عشرات المنشورات والملصقات في جميع أنحاء الحي وحول مكان الحدث، بالإضافة إلى توزيع- أشرطة وملصقات على الحضور تتضمن عبارات تضامن مع الشهيدة.

بالرغم من معاناة اللجنة المنظمة من تدخل جهاز الأمن ومحاولاته الشتى لتخريب البرنامج ومنع نشر الوعي عن العنف ضد المرأة السودانية، تمكنت اللجنة من التغلب على كل العقبات وشنت التأبين كما كان مقرراً.

شهد التأبين حضور المئات من أهالي عوضية وجيرانها وأصدقائها بالإضافة إلى عدد كبير من قادة  وأعضاء الأحزاب السياسية والنشطاء والصحفيين والمواطنين العاديين الذين حضروا لإظهار دعمهم لهذه القضية والوقوف تضامناً مع عائلة عجبنا.

افتتح البرنامج بآيات من القرآن الكريم تلتها خطب وقصائد تكريمية للشهيدة قام بتأديتها أفراد من أسرة عوضية وممثلي حي الديم واتحاد طلاب جبال النوبة وآخرون.

طالب المتحدثون بالعدالة والمساءلة القانونية وتحقيق الشفافية في قضية عوضية، كما طالبوا بإزالة شرطة النظام العام الوحشية التي وقع ضحيتها أعداد لا تعد ولا تحصى من المواطنين السودانيين.

كان الشعور العام عالي بشكل لا يصدق وكان الجو مليئاً بروح التضامن والانسجام. مقتل عوضية المؤسف وحد الشعب السوداني من مختلف الخلفيات والقبائل والأعراق والأوضاع الاجتماعية. ضموا أيديهم وقواهم في اتجاه واحد نحو قضية وطنية وقضية رأي عام واحدة: و هي قضية عوضية – قضية المرأة السودانية – قضية أمة بأكملها.
